Faint disorder or “Syncope” is a condition where a person faints due to a sudden reduction of blood flow in the brain causing loss of consciousness. The onset of syncope is sudden and requires emergency hospitalization in severe cases of cardiac syncope.

The onset of Syncope is multifactorial. There are three major types of Syncope that include Reflex Syncope, Orthostatic hypotensive syncope, and cardiac syncope.

CAUSES OF SYNCOPE

1. External trigger

  • Frequent bouts of chest
  • Vasovagal syncope is a result of reduced blood flow in the brain due to a slow heart beating rate.
  • Common triggering factors are unpleasant sight, pain, heat, laughter, coughing, and sudden jerks while standing and sitting fast.

2. Low Blood Pressure

  • A drop in blood pressure causes fainting disorder and is called orthostatic syncope, which occurs in old age post 65years of age.
  • Usually, a balance is created by the heart to pump more blood to stabilize the blood pressure. In this type of syncope, there is an interrupted flow of blood to the brain that causes fainting.
  • Dehydration, Diabetes mellitus, medication and nervous conditions cause orthostatic syncope.

3. Cardiac conditions

  • Narrowed blood vessels, damaged heart tissue and vascular conditions cause a decrease in the blood flow in the brain causing cardiac syncope
  • The risk of cardiac syncope increases with age
  • Weakened heart chambers, coronary artery disease, congenital heart diseases, stroke, and heart failure cause syncope.

4. Seizure Disorder

  • Certain kinds of seizure disorders in children cause an involuntary slowdown of heart rate for 5-30 seconds causing syncope.
SYMPTOMS OF SYNCOPE
  • Profuse sweating
  • Nausea
  • Yawning or sleepiness
  • Confusion and dizziness
  • Heavy breathing
  • Blurred vision or blackouts
  • Ringing in the ear
  • Loss of strength to wake up
  • These symptoms are temporary and the person regains consciousness within few minutes.
DIAGNOSIS OF SYNCOPE
  • Medical History
  • Check for blood pressure
  • Electrocardiogram(ECG)
  • Carotid Sinus test
  • Blood tests
TREATMENT OF SYNCOPE
  • Measures for treatment depend on the above-mentioned causative factors. Depending on the severity of the factor associated with a particular form of syncope, treatment measurements are considered.

QUICK MEASURES FOR PREVENTING SYNCOPE
    • Some common counter-pressure techniques are followed to avoid syncope
    • Tensing of arm muscles tightly
    • Clenching the lower body muscles
    • Leg crossing
    • Tight squeezing of hands into a fist.
